Much of Richard’s work and art relates to research for the book, ‘Art Media Design’.
An experienced photographer and designer with an interest in sculpture, Richard expanded his sculpture in order to bring a different perspective to ‘Art Media Design’. Having had a successful career over the last 10 years he can bring his book to market, confident he has a broad enough experience base to justify ‘Art Media Design’.
Natural Curve
A focus of his sculpture has been on the nature of organic forms and their creation. The helix or 3D spiral is not just a part of organic forms, it is the structural component for them; from the DNA inside the cells, to the external skin of the organism.
This investigation of the ‘natural curve’ or spiral has been an ongoing influence in this mix of abstract and functional sculptures. The spiral has the same role in sculpture as it is does in nature; to define space, create surface and provide structure. The spiral curve is mostly used in organic works, though flat curves and straight steel are used too.
Straight steel gives an uncomfortable form. It looks weird and gives an awkwardness when applied. Sometimes steel is bent up, then re-straightened. The slight kinks and bumps that remain make the steel visually softer, less abrupt.
Another aspect of the natural curve is the way it touches the ground. Its touch appears lighter, not so ‘gravity defying’ as straight stuff.
Minimalist Representation
‘Peeking Window’ is one of many 3D experiments in minimalist representation. In examining the division of space, a window is used to represent a wall (every window has a wall). To emphasise the windows visually divisive elements it is carved from a solid slab of wood which also connects it to the solid wall. The holes in the slab allow us to see through, and the boards that cross window space act as a physical barrier preventing the audience from climbing through it, thus maintaining the integrity of the (represented) wall.

Despair
Hall Stand $1500
The mother-child relationship is projected on to the tree-fruit relationship. The fallen (and broken) glass brings despair.

Every window has a wall. Here the audience creates their own wall.

Materials
The steel is a mix of industry off cuts, recycled, and new round bar and reinforcing rods.
Bending is done cold then arc and mig welded.
The stone is from the construction industry. It is pre-polished then shaped by hammer and chisel, and diamond cutting disc.
Glass, leather, copper, brass, timber and found materials are used where needed.
Range
The examples here cover the range of pieces I have made. Many sold before being photographed, It is disappointing that a bag with more photos and client order details was ‘lost’.
