Form - Function
Artistic approach Paul and Richard have been enjoying and exploring.
Materials
The sculptures Paul and Richard create use a variety of materials; timber, metal, stone, glass, leather and found objects. Most of the timber used by these artists is reclaimed from either forestry, milling, or demolitions. The River Red Gum is sourced from the harvest scraps on the Lachlan River, NSW, Australia. Felled for rail sleepers, the off cuts were destined for charcoal manufacture.
Form - Function
As function is removed as a motivation for an object’s existence, an alternative explanation must be created. In shifting the decorative components to the structural level, form is set against function, leaving the audience to adjudicate.
Decorative overpowers Functional
The result of this is that people are reluctant to use the functional aspects, eg. ‘Fire’ shown above is a hat and coat rack, but people refuse to hang their stuff on it as it is “too nice for that”!
Decorative is Structural
The decorative components are not just added. The essential functional components are isolated, then the structural becomes the ‘artistic playground’.
Steel vs. Timber
The contrast between the organic forms of the timber and the machined steel is softened by the ‘natural curve’ applied to the steel. The steel flows from the timber, as an extension of it.

A minimalist tale of the grape
as represented by the end game.
This tells the story, the whole gamut.
The end product is also the beginning;
with bottles representing grapes, and
hard timber leaves state age and tradition.
The steel vine is the inner essence. It examines strength and adds solidarity.
All in all, a delightful well aged drop
to be enjoyed at your leisure.

Pond Life
Hall Stand

A pond is a contained ecosystem.
It’s all here; the food chain, shelter, your reflection, pollution and its effects.
This is probably made 2 seconds too early.
Why? Because in 2 seconds the shark can see
the two orange fish and that will be spectacular.
That’s the nature of the food chain’s spiral narrative.
This piece of furniture saves you from
sticking your head under water.

Shark
As the shark patrols the the golden fish hide in the tyre around the base of the tree. He is caught with the tail of one golden fish in his mouth. Behind the shark, a small blue fish nibbles on the golden fish’s head. Next, the shark and the two orange fish will come into each other’s line of sight.
Your Reflection
As the audience moves around the sculpture there is a specific point where fish in disparate planes align and a face is revealled. Like a mirror it is only from the correct angle that yoou can see your reflection. The sludge that oozes from the drain also has a role in both the reflection and the pollution that comes into the pond.
